英語面接を、雑談的な英会話だと考えている人は、それだけで負け組ですね!!

教員採用試験で、英語教師を志望する人には、英語の実技試験として、英語面接が課されることが多いですよね。

この英語面接を、普通の英会話だと勘違いしている受験者が多いようです。

そして、その「英会話」の準備をするために、英語のネイティブ・スピーカーと会話していればなんとかなると思っている人がいる。

そんな準備は何の役にも立ちませんよ!!

もし、英語面接の準備のために、英語のネイティブ・スピーカーと雑談していれば、それで英語面接が上手くなるというのであれば、日本語の面接の準備として、友達と日本語でしゃべっていればいいということになりますよね。

確かに、母語と外国語の違いがあることは理解できます。

また、外国語は話す機会が少ないので、できるだけ話す機会をつくろうというのも理解できます。

でも、ただ、英語でアメリカ人やイギリス人といった外国人と会話していれば、英語が上手になると錯覚し、英語面接も上手にできるようになるというのは、全くの誤解であり、愚策です。

日本人の英語学習者の最低・最悪なメンタリティは、外国人(白人限定)と英語でしゃべっていればカッコいいと思ってしまうところなんですよね。

それも、知的に、ウィットに富んだ語りや、専門的知識や教養を織り交ぜた会話ではなく、日本人英語学習者の多くは、”What’s up?”みたいなちょっとした挨拶表現を交わすくらいで満足してしまいます。

雑談を否定するつもりはありませんが、雑談だけでは、人の心を動かす語りにはなりませんし、面接の語りで、面接官を動かすこともできません。

日本人が日本語で、いくら友人と雑談をしたところで、日本語の面接で高得点が取れないように、英語で英語のネイティブ・スピーカーと雑談をしたところで、英語面接の語りで、高得点は取れません。

単なる発音練習として、英語を母語とする外国人と英語を話すというのなら、それはそれで価値があるでしょう。

でも、それは語りの練習にはなり得ないことを知っておくべきです。

教採の英語面接のために、どんなに留学生やALTと雑談的にしゃべってもダメです。

日本語も英語も同じ言語です。

言語を用いて、人の心を動かすためには、専門のトレーニングが必要です。

雑談とフォーマルな語り、レトリカルな語りは、根本的に違います。

他愛無い雑談が、語りの訓練になることは、まずありません。

英語面接で高得点が取れるかどうかは、専門のトレーニングを受けているかどうかで決まります。

以下に、アメリカの教員採用試験(といっても、アメリカでは、各教育委員会”School Board”が採用を行いますので、国家的な、あるいは、州ごとの共通した採用試験というのはありませんが。)の面接でよく聞かれる面接課題88問をあげておきますので、あなたならどう答えるかを、雑談的にではなく、レトリカルにしっかりと考えてみてください。

2. What makes you qualified for this teaching position?

3. Tell us a little about your professional experiences.

4. Do you have a professional portfolio you would like to share with us?

5. Why did you become a teacher?

8. What would you tell a parent if he or she was concerned about their kid’s grades?

10. What course of action would you take if a student says he or she is being abused at home?

1. Give an example of how you differentiated instruction in a lesson.
